Manitoba Chamber Orchestra. Founded in 1972 in Winnipeg by the conductor Ruben Gurevich. In 1990 the MCO had a core of 22 players drawn largely from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.. The orchestra's regular venues have beenYoung United Church, the Fort Garry Hotel, and Westminster United Church.
Hart House's facilities include the Great Hall located in the East Wing which functions as an event venue, conference centre, and concert hall and houses a Steinway grand piano. The Music Room in the West Wing also boasts a grand piano, and is used for smaller concerts, lectures and events.
Piero Gamba became music director in 1971, a position he held until the fall of 1980. In 1979 he led the WSO in a gala concert at Carnegie Hall. Kazuhiro Koizumi became music director in 1983, and in the 6 years he served with the WSO the orchestra's subscriber base rose to more than 10 000 patrons.
The musician who directs a group of singers or instrumentalists without participating in the actual singing or playing is essentially the creation of the early 19th century; the one who makes a full-time career of such leadership is the product of the final decades of that century.
