Philippe Magnan. Oboist, b Quebec City, 26 Nov 1963; premier prix oboe (CMQ) 1984. During his studies at the CMQ with Jacques Simard, he won first prize in the Concours de musique du Québec (Canadian Music Competitions) in 1981, the first prize of the MSO Concours in 1982, and the second prize ex equo at the International Competition of Toulon, France, in 1984. With scholarships from the Wilfrid-Pelletier Foundation and the Prix d'Europe (1987), he studied at the Musikhochschule of Freiburg, Germany, in the class of Heinz Holliger, and at the Rotterdam Conservatory where he was awarded the Diplôme d'excellence in Thomas Indermühle's class. In 1988 he recorded works by Locatelli, Couperin, Dutilleux, and Britten with Denis Bédard, harpsichord, Marie Grenon, cello, and Gérald Lévesque, piano (RCI 651). That year he formed the Beauséjour-Magnan duo with the harpsichordist Luc Beauséjour. The duo made a Canadian tour for the JMC (YMC) and performed in various cultural centres and festivals. Magnan was appointed first oboe at the Quebec Symphony Orchestra in December 1988. He has been a guest soloist with numerous orchestras in Canada and Europe.
