Petite Rivière, NS, Unincorporated Place. Petite Rivière, located on the river from which it takes its name, is about 13 km southwest of LAHAVE. The name ("little river") was given by Samuel de CHAMPLAIN. Its MI'KMAQ name was Simkook. French settlers brought by Pierre du Gua de MONTS founded the settlement about 1632. The community was based on farming and fishing, while the settlers also hunted to supplement their diets. Agriculture and fishing remain the main industries, though various support industries, such as lumbering, are carried on. Petite Rivière attracts many summer visitors, cottage owners and renters, drawn by its nearby sandy beaches and quiet, peaceful scenery. The community is close to Rissers Beach Provincial Park and Crescent Beach.
