Date: May 8, 1871 Treaty of Washington
By the Treaty of Washington, Americans were granted fishing rights in Canadian waters and the use of Canadian canals and the St Lawrence River; Canadians were allowed to navigate Lake Michigan, the St Clair Flats Canal and Alaskan rivers. The American hope that Britain would simply hand over all of Canada was not realized.
