Date: November 16, 1837 Insurrection in Lower Canada
Governor Gosford issued warrants for the arrest of 26 Patriote leaders on charges of high treason, initiating the events of the Lower Canada Rebellion. Troops and Patriotes were in battle a few days later. Though a failure, the insurrection led directly to Durham's Report and the Union of the two Canadas and indirectly to responsible government.
