Robert Abram Bartlett, arctic mariner (b at Brigus, Nfld 15 Aug 1875; d at New York City 28 Apr 1946). A sealer and merchant seaman from his youth, Bartlett began his arctic career in 1898 as commander of the ship Windward on the first of Robert Peary's 3 attempts to reach the North Pole. On Peary's last attempt in 1908-09, Bartlett accompanied him to within 240 km of the pole.
In 1913 Bartlett commanded KARLUK, supply ship of the CANADIAN ARCTIC EXPEDITION led by Vilhjalmur STEFANSSON. The ship was wrecked near Wrangel Island north of Siberia, and Bartlett made a daring sled trip across the ice to the east Siberian port of East Cape, where he took ship for Alaska. Later he commanded the Effie M. Morrisey on scientific voyages to the Arctic spanning 2 decades. He published his autobiography, The Log of Bob Bartlett, in 1928.
