The Canadian Football Hall of Fame and Museum is located in HAMILTON, Ont. While its official opening took place 28 November 1972, discussions about the concept had been taking place since 1962. Charter membership took place in 1963, with the selection of its first members in the categories of Builders and Players, categories that still exist today. Builders include those individuals in the sport who exhibit service of exceptional and unquestioned contribution to Canadian football in general, including team or league executives, coaches and game officials, and those concerned with team operation. Players are inducted if they have been retired for 3 years and possess qualities such as character and sportsmanship combined with playing ability, as well as having contributed to the team or to football in general.
The selection committee is chaired by the Commissioner of the CFL and includes a cross section of media, CFL executives, coaches, and former players. The more than 200 honourees have a steel bust sculpted and arranged in a place of honour within the building. The GREY CUP is also on display along with artefacts, historic mementos and exhibits which highlight football's growth and development in Canada.
