Sarah (Sass) Jordan. Singer, songwriter, b Birmingham, England, 23 Dec 1962. Jordan moved to Montreal as a child and first gained notice as the bass player in the band The Pinups when she was still in her mid-teens. She later worked as a session singer in another local group called The Box before releasing her Tell Somebody solo debut album on Aquarius Records in 1988. The album was certified platinum and Jordan won the most promising female vocalist Juno Award in 1989.
In 1992 Jordan released Racine, which reached double-platinum status in Canada and earned Jordan the title of female rock artist of the year by the American music magazine Billboard. That year she also performed a duet with Joe Cocker for The Bodyguard soundtrack, which sold more than 27 million copies worldwide. Jordan's songs have also been featured in a variety of other movies and television shows, including Melrose Place, Party of Five, Baywatch and Knight Rider. Jordan moved to Los Angeles to record 1994's platinum-certified Rats album before returning to Canada in 1996. While Racine and Rats were both released on major US labels, Aquarius put out the subsequent Present (1997) and Hot Gossip (2000) albums. After selling almost half-a-million records in Canada, and more than a million worldwide, Jordan gained acclaim south of the border starring as Janis Joplin in the off-Broadway play Love Janis. As an actress, she has also guest-starred on NBC-TV's Sisters and was featured in the Toronto and Winnipeg stage productions of The Vagina Monologues. Jordan returned to the Canadian spotlight in 2003 as one of the judges on the popular talent-search TV show Canadian Idol. With Jordan's profile being at its highest point in a decade, Aquarius released Sass...The Best of Sass Jordan, a greatest hits album featuring the single "Brand New Day" and one other new song in the summer of 2003. While still starring on Canadian Idol, Jordan spent much of 2005 working on a new album, collaborating on a biography with distinguished Canadian music writer and friend Martin Melhuish, and involving herself in a number of multimedia projects.
