The Fisherman and His Soul. Ballet by Harry Somers (music) and Grant Strate (choreography). It was premiered in Hamilton, Ont, 5 Nov 1956, by the National Ballet of Canada; George Crum conducted the orchestra. The plot is based on a story by Oscar Wilde about a fisherman who gives up his soul to win the love of a mermaid. The music, scored for small orchestra, is partly serial, partly tonal. The ballet, about a half-hour in duration, remained in the repertoire of the National Ballet until 1960 and was performed widely in Canada and the USA.
