Stephen Chenette. Trumpeter, teacher, conductor, b Tampa, Fla, 16 Dec 1935; B MUS (Curtis) 1956, MFA (Minnesota) 1974. After studies with Saul Caston, Armando Ghitalla, Arnold Jacobs, Rafael Mendez, Samuel Krauss, Gilbert Johnson, and William Vacchiano, he studied during the summers at Tanglewood 1954-5, and at the American SO League's Eastern Institute of Orchestral Studies 1967-9. He studied conducting under George Trautwein, Frederick Fennell, and others. Chenette served as principal trumpet with the Denver SO 1958-60, the Boston Pops 1960, the Minnesota Orchestra 1960-72, and the St Paul Chamber Orchestra 1961-6, and became a charter member of the International Trumpet Guild in 1975. He was appointed in 1972 to the Faculty of Music of the University of Toronto, where he has taught trumpet, orchestral repertoire for winds, brass chamber music, and conducted the Concert Band, the Wind Symphony, and the Brass Choir. In 1973 he joined the teaching staff of the National Music Camp of Canada.
In 1979 Chenette and trumpeter, Don MacIntosh, participated in the Grand Canyon Rim to Rim Standard B-flat Trumpet Run. The two runners jogged the 38 km from rim to rim stopping at pre-determined locations to play designated movements from Gary Kulesha's Suite for Two Trumpets: Grand Canyon Run, which was commissioned for the event. Chenette conducted the Hannaford Street Silver Band on its 1988 CBC recording (SMCD-5103). He has also conducted recordings by the University of Toronto Wind Ensemble (1987, Golden Crest CA-CBDNA-87-10) and the Composers' Brass Group (Eckhardt-Gramatté's Fanfare on Music Gallery Edn MGE-34). He is principal trumpet on recordings with the Minneapolis SO, Minnesota Orchestra, and St Paul Chamber Orchestra. He also recorded Fanfare - Festival Music at the Cathedral Church of St. Mark with conductor-composer Gerald Bales (Waterloo WR-8024). He has written articles for the International Trumpet Guild Journal and Newsletter and is a contributor to EMC. He serves frequently as a clinician and adjudicator.
