Ucluelet are a Nootka tribe of 581 people (1996c) living on West Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island. Their traditional territory includes Ucluelet Inlet, the Ucluth Peninsula and the outer coast northward to Green Point on Long Beach. The Ucluelet formerly consisted of several independent groups which amalgamated as a tribe as a result of prolonged warfare and decimation from disease after European contact. In the early historic period, Ucluelet groups gained additional territories through warfare. In c 1790 they conquered the Namintaht for the rich salmon fishery on the Nahmint River. The Ucluelet, aided by Clayoquot with firearms, also took Effingham Inlet from the A'utsaht and the Hachaaht, now both extinct. Today, the Ucluelet live in their traditional village of Ittatsoo, across from the modern town of Ucluelet.
