La Revue d'histoire de l'Amérique française was founded in 1947 by Lionel GROULX, professor of history at U de Montréal. At first the RHAF was devoted to the history of French colonization in America - not just the history of French Canada, but also French efforts at colonization in the US, the Caribbean and S America. The development of the RHAF cannot be separated from the evolution of francophone historiography in Québec. It was started at the same time as the history departments of the only 2 Québec francophone universities of the day, U de M and U Laval. It quickly became the favoured vehicle for communications among francophone specialists in Canadian and Québec history. It is now the major review devoted to Québec history (though it also accepts some articles on other topics). The RHAF is published quarterly by the Institut d'histoire de l'Amérique française, which selects the members of its editorial committee.

Groulx, Lionel
Groulx kept posing the worrisome question of French and Catholic survival in an urban, industrial, Anglo-Saxon environment (courtesy Library and Archives Canada/C-16657).
