Claude de Ramezay, officer, acting governor of NEW FRANCE (b at La Gesse, France 15 June 1659; d at Québec C 31 July 1724). An officer in the TROUPES DE LA MARINE, he arrived in Canada in 1685. He served as governor of Trois-Rivières 1690-99, as commander of the Canadian troops 1699-1704, and as governor of Montréal 1704-24 (except for the period 1714-16 when he was acting governor of the colony during VAUDREUIL's absence). During much of this time he was also involved in the FUR TRADE and lumber business. The magnificent Château de Ramezay, which he built in 1705, still stands in Montréal.
