Sorel Etrog, sculptor, writer, philosopher (b at Iasi, Romania 29 Aug 1933). After a turbulent and traumatic childhood, Etrog began his formal art training in Tel Aviv after his family immigrated to Israel. A chance meeting with Toronto collector Samuel J. Zacks resulted in a solo show in Toronto in 1959, and Etrog moved to that city in 1963. His reputation as an intense, dynamic sculptor was quickly established and in 1966 he was chosen as one of the 3 artists representing Canada at the Venice Biennale. Etrog has important private and public commissions to his credit, some of which, such as Ritual Head (Calgary, 1976), are monumental in scale. Crafted predominantly in bronze and more recently in rolled sheet metal, Etrog's sculptures are reminiscent of the structures of the human body or of the massive bolts and hinges of heavy machinery, always suggesting a latent potential for movement.
