The Economic Council of Canada was established 1963 and dissolved 1993. Its role was to assess medium- and long-term prospects of the economy; to consider ways of strengthening Canada's international financial and trade position; to study the effects of economic growth and technical change on employment and income; to explore policies to foster regional development; and to study means of increasing Canadian participation in the ownership, control and management of industries in Canada. A federally funded crown corporation, it reported directly to the prime minister. It published an Annual Review of the economy and a periodical, Au Courant. Privately funded research institutes are left to try to do the type and scope of research the council was doing. It this is not done, Canadian business, labour and governments will have to rely on the research done in other countries.
