The Calder trophy is awarded annually to the player chosen by hockey writers as being the most proficient in his first year of competition in the NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE. To be eligible, a player cannot have previously played more than 25 games in any major professional league. It was first presented in 1936 by Frank Calder, NHL president, and was renamed Calder Memorial Trophy after his death in 1943. The first winner was Carl Voss. Among players who have won the trophy and gone on to stardom are Terry SAWCHUK, Bernie GEOFFRION, Frank MAHOVLICH, Bobby ORR and Mario LEMIEUX.
