Victor-Lévy Beaulieu, journalist, novelist, essayist, playwright, publisher (b at St-Paul-de-la-Croix, Qué 2 Sept 1945). A well-known figure, Beaulieu is important to Québec literature as much for his various activities as for his own respected writing. He has won many literary prizes: the Grand prix littéraire de la Ville de Montréal (Les Grands-pères, 1971), a Governor General's Award (Don Quichotte de la démanche, 1974), the Prix France-Canada (Monsieur Melville, 1978; tr 1985) and the Prix Jean-Béraud-Molson (Satan Belhumeur, 1981).

Beaulieu loves to experiment with various literary styles and shatter their usual boundaries.

As an essayist he is interested in his literary ancestors (Pour saluer Victor Hugo, 1971; Jack Kerouac, 1972) and in forgotten Québec writings (Manuel de la petite littérature du Québec, 1974). He has written 2 TV series (Les As and Race de monde, a fine adaptation of his first novel in the Vraie Saga des Beauchemin) and several plays (including Ma Corriveau, 1976, and Monsieur Zéro, 1977).

After working for Éditions du jour and Éditions de l'Aurore, he operated his own publishing company, VLB éditeur, from 1976-84, and has published poetry, novels, plays and stories, each with equal attention to detail. Constantly evolving, Beaulieu's work testifies to his exploration of a real and literary homeland.
