Anne of Green Gables, novel by Lucy Maud MONTGOMERY, published in Boston, 1908; its first Canadian edition appeared in Toronto, 1943. The first of 8 novels about Anne, this has remained Montgomery's most popular work. Its appeal lies in Anne's development as a volubly imaginative, overarticulate, spontaneous but sensitive child-heroine. Rescued from an orphanage, she finds ample "scope for the imagination" at Green Gables, where she wins the hearts of Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, and in Avonlea, where she wins the community's affection.

Anne's bright passage from childhood into adolescence has won international acclaim for the novel; it has gone through numerous editions, has been translated into at least 15 languages and has twice been made into a film. A musical version of the story has played annually in Charlottetown, PEI, since 1965, and in 1985 and 1987 widely acclaimed film adaptations were televised.
