My related story is in reference to Gwyn's article in the Vancouver Sun on March 15/13 titled "Canada's inflexible health care system takes toll on livelihoods." I have just come through an experience that confirms his excellent article. I will turn 80 this year. In October of 2012 at our home in Ajijic, Mexico I was forced to stop all activities because of a spinal problem. After all necessary tests it was determined only surgery on my spine would alleviate the problem. I sent a letter in Dec./12 with friends to my family Doctor asking him to make an appointment with a spinal surgeon so determine a date for surgery. I received his response in February/13 to say I would receive a call to set a date. I got the call from the surgeon in North Vancouver to give me a date for April, 2013. In the meantime, I was on four pain killers from my Mexican Doctors. They said they could operate to remove a cyst pinching on my spinal cord to solve the problem. I made the decision to go ahead with the surgery on Jan. 3/13 and had surgery on Jan. 7/13. The Doctors and hospital staff were first class. I am back into my regular physical activities after 2 months since surgery. Tell Gwyn his comments in his article are so true! There was no quality of life with constant pain. I will attest to the excellent medical system in Mexico and the relative inexpensive cost. Hopefully, I will get some reimbursement from my Provincial Health Care Plan, and failing that I can deduct the balance from my Federal Income Tax. I would urge all Canadians to check out other options such as Mexico. I would have mortgaged my house to get relief.
