Confederation

The Dominion of Canada wasn't born out of revolution, or a sweeping outburst of nationalism. Rather, it was created in a series of conferences and orderly negotiations, culminating in the terms of Confederation on 1 July 1867. This Collection brings together content related to the creation of Canada.

				
					Art HallmanArt (Arthur Garfield) Hallman. Singer, arranger, saxophonist, pianist, b Kitchener, Ont, 11 Jan 1910, d Richmond Hill, Ont, 5 Dec 1994. Raised in Vancouver, Hallman began studying piano at 10 and saxophone at 18, and played on CNR steamship cruises to Alaska, then on radio station CJOR.

					Roxolana RoslakRoxolana (Audry) Roslak. Soprano, b Chortkiv, Ukraine, 11 Feb 1940, naturalized Canadian 1953; Artist Diploma (Toronto) 1964. She studied voice as a child in Edmonton with Mrs. J.B. Carmichael and later at the University of Toronto and the RCMT with Howell Glynne, Irene Jessner, and Ernesto Vinci.

					Patricia Rideout-RosenbergPatricia (Irene) Rideout-Rosenberg (formerly Rideout). Contralto, b Saint John, NB, 16 Mar 1931, d Cambridge, Ont, 8 Sep 2006. Patricia Rideout studied piano 1941-3 with Beatrice Price and voice 1946-8 with Agnes Forbes in Saint John, and also performed in theatricals there.

					Cornelis OpthofCornelis Opthof. Baritone, b Rotterdam 10 Feb 1930, d Toronto 16 Dec 2008. Emigrating to Canada in 1949, Cornelis Opthof studied voice in Belleville, Ont, with Catharina Hendrikse, and 1957-9 on scholarship at the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). In 1960 he was a CBC Talent Festival winner.
