Uchucklesaht First Nation

Uchucklesaht, a Nootka (Nuu-Chah-Nulth) Nation of West Barkley Sound on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Formerly a prominent Nation with extensive territories in East Barkley Sound, the Uchucklesaht were decimated by disease and warfare in the early historic period, and their territory in the mid-19th century was confined to Uchucklesit Inlet.

The Uchucklesaht were originally members of the Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council however they and four other nations, the Huu-ay-aht, Ka:'yu'k't'h'/Che:k'tles7et'h, Toquaht, and the Ucluelet, formed the Maa-nulth First Nations Treaty Society. In 2011, after more than 15 years of negotiations, the Maa-nulth Treaty came into effect.

In 2012 there were 203 registered Uchucklesaht, and most are located on two reserves, Cowishulth and Hilthatis, in the Clayoquot District near Barkley Sound in BC.
