Checleseht people make up the northernmost band of Nuu-chah-nulth on the west coast of Vancouver Island, BC. Their traditional territory includes the south and east shores of the Brooks Peninsula, Checleset Bay, Nasparti Inlet, Ououkinsh Inlet and Malksope Inlet. Their villages were Acous and Upsowis. In the 20th century the Checleseht intermarried extensively with the Kyuquot, and by 1950 most Checleseht had settled in Kyuquot villages. The Checleseht band has since officially amalgamated with the Kyuquot Band (pop 416, 1996). The Checleseht, however, still maintain their identity as a separate band.
