Dunn, Alexander Roberts

Alexander Roberts Dunn, army officer (b at York, Upper Canada 15 Sept 1833; d near Senufe, Abyssinia 25 Jan 1868). Dunn was the first Canadian recipient of the Victoria Cross, won as a lieutenant in the 11th (Prince Albert's Own) Regiment of Hussars at the charge of the Light Brigade at Balaklava in 1854. He helped to organize the 100th (Prince of Wales' Royal Canadian) Regiment of Foot, a British unit raised in Canada, and later became its commanding officer in Gibraltar. He was killed on an expedition to Abyssinia when his hunting rifle accidentally discharged.
