Pope, William Henry
William Henry Pope, lawyer, journalist, politician, judge (b at Bedeque, PEI 29 May 1825; d at St Eleanors, PEI 7 Oct 1879). Born into a family important in the economic and public life of Prince Edward Island, he became a lawyer after study in London. Like many other Island lawyers, he served as a land agent, and in 1854 made his name from a controversial real-estate transaction in which he and 3 associates made more than £10,000 at the expense of his employer. He was editor of the colony's leading Tory newspaper, the Islander, 1859-72. Elected to the Assembly in 1863, he enthusiastically supported union of the British colonies in North America. His position being unpopular, he left the Cabinet in 1866 and did not contest subsequent elections. As the colony's most tenacious advocate of CONFEDERATION, however, he continued to promote the Island's union with Canada. When this was accomplished in 1873 under the leadership of his younger brother, James Colledge Pope, the government of Sir John A. Macdonald appointed him judge of the Prince County Court.
