Riddell, Walter Alexander
Walter Alexander Riddell, scholar, public servant (b at Stratford, Ont 5 Aug 1881; d in Algonquin Park, Ont 27 July 1963). He served as deputy minister of labour in Ontario before joining the International Labour Organization in Geneva in 1920. In 1925 he became Canadian advisory officer at the League of Nations. A strong believer in collective security, he acted without instructions in 1935 in proposing oil sanctions against Italy, which had invaded Ethiopia. Repudiated by PM KING's government in this "Riddell incident," he was subsequently posted to Washington and New Zealand. He became professor of international relations at U of T and published a memoir, World Security by Conference, and books on international relations.
