Université de Montréal, Montréal, Qué, was founded in 1876 and opened in 1878 as a branch of UNIVERSITÉ LAVAL of Québec. Its 4 schools were law, medicine, theology and arts. In 1920 the Montréal institution became a full and independent university known as Université de Montréal. For almost a century, U de Montréal was a private denominational university governed by the Roman Catholic Church. In 1967 the Québec government passed a bill making it a nondenominational university with a public character. U de Montréal is the largest Québec university, with a student enrolment of close to 50 000 in its 13 faculties, 63 departments, schools or institutes and affiliated schools of commerce (École des Hautes Études Commerciales) and engineering (École polytechnique). It offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in all disciplines except agriculture and forestry. Research activities are being carried on in all academic units and in 120 specialized centres or groups.
