Stellarton, NS, incorporated as a town in 1889, population 4485 (2011c), 4717 (2006c). The Town of Stellarton bordering the East River, 18 km southwest of Pictou, was settled (1774) by five HECTOR families. Coal enticed English colliers in 1827, who built the community of Albion Mines. Their foundry built the SAMSON, Nova Scotia's first steam engine (1827) and steamboat (1830), and cast rails for the first locomotive run on iron rails in Canada (1839). The town became an important railway hub.

In 1870 Albion Mines was renamed Stellarton, after its Stellar Coal. Mining flourished, attracting British and European immigrants. Stellarton coal fueled Pictou County's industrial boom (1870-1920): by 1910 the Acadian Co employed 1350 miners. Mining gradually declined, except during WWII, finishing in 1957 for economic and safety reasons. 650 men perished in these dangerous pits, including 88 in the 1918 Allan Explosion. The Acadia Rescue Corps was famous for mine rescue exploits.
