Archibald, Sir Adams George
Sir Adams George Archibald, lawyer, politician, lieutenant-governor of Manitoba and Nova Scotia (b at Truro, NS 18 May 1814; d there 14 Dec 1892). After serving as solicitor general (1856-60) and attorney general (1860-63) in the Nova Scotia Assembly, he succeeded Joseph HOWE as provincial Liberal leader in 1863. A strong supporter of Confederation, he attended the 3 conferences at Charlottetown, Québec and London, and publicly defended the scheme against the attacks of Howe and William ANNAND in 1866. In 1867 he entered the federal Cabinet as secretary of state and in 1870 was named lieutenant-governor of Manitoba and the North-West Territories. During his brief term (1870-72), he laid the foundation of the civil institutions of the West, and negotiated the first 2 treaties with western Indians. In 1873 he became lieutenant-governor of Nova Scotia, retiring in 1883.
