Rep by Pop ("representation by population"), demanded by citizens of Canada West to replace equal representation of the 2 Canadas in the PROVINCE OF CANADA
after 1850, when Canada West gained a growing population lead over the largely French-speaking eastern section. Urged by George BROWN
from 1853 on, it led to sectional breakdown by 1864; the ultimate remedy was federal government within CONFEDERATION
