Place des Arts, Montréal's major performing-arts complex, consists of 3 halls. Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier, originally named Grande Salle when it opened in 1963, is the largest, with a seating capacity of about 3000. Designed by the Montréal architectural firm of Affleck, Desbarats, Dimakopoulos, Lebensold, Michaud and Sise, the structure is made of reinforced concrete and the roof of steel. It is the home for the ORCHESTRE SYMPHONIQUE DE MONTRÉAL, and the Opéra du Québec and Les GRANDS BALLETS CANADIENS have performed there. Édifice des Théâtres, comprising 2 halls, one built on top of the other, was opened in 1967. The upper Théâtre Maisonneuve accommodates about 1300, and the lower Théâtre Port-Royal about 750. This part of the complex was designed by Montréal architects David, Barott, Boulva, Dufresne and opened in time to showcase EXPO 67 events. In 1978 the Théâtre du Café de la Place, with a seating capacity of about 130, was opened for intimate theatrical performances. Many international stars of music, theatre and dance have appeared at Place des Arts, including Maria Callas, Vladimir Horowitz, Jean-Pierre Rampal and Miles Davis.
