Dubé, Marcel
Marcel Dubé, writer (b at Montréal 3 Jan 1930). In 1950 Dubé helped found a troupe called La Jeune Scène. The 1951 production of Le Bal triste at L'Ermitage in Montréal was the first of a collection that is the most extensive, significant and representative body of Québec and Canadian plays of the 1950s and first half of the 1960s. Other plays such as Zone (1953), Un simple soldat (1957), and Au retour des oies blanches (1966) secured his reputation as the most prolific and original playwright of his generation in Québec. Dubé's usual theme is the tragedy of human destiny.

Dubé lived in France from 1953-55. NFB scenarist, journalist, producer and author for both stage and TV, Dubé has received many grants and has won the St-Jean-Baptiste Society's Prix Morin (1966), Québec's Prix David (1973) for his work as a whole, the Molson Prize for contributions to the arts in Canada (1984) and the medal of the Académie canadienne-française (1987). In 2005, Dubé was given the GOVERNOR GENERAL'S PERFORMING ARTS AWARD for lifetime artistic achievement.
