Cain narrowly missed a medal in the C-1 1000 m at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, finishing fourth. At the world championships in 1989 he won a silver medal in the event. In 1991 he began to concentrate in the C-2, or doubles, events, and with his partner David Frost made the finals in the 500 and 1000 m events at the 1992 Olympics, but failed to win a medal. Cain is a member of the Order of Canada.
