Gray, John Howard
John Howard Gray, playwright (b at Ottawa 26 Sept 1946). Raised in Truro, NS, and educated at Mount Allison and the University of British Columbia, Gray was a founder of Vancouver's Tamahnous Theatre. His celebrated play Billy Bishop Goes To War (1978) is a 2-man musical which scrutinizes W.A. BISHOP'S rise to heroic stature. After touring Canada, Bishop opened on Broadway in 1980. It won a Governor General's Award for drama in 1983. Gray has also written the plays 18 Wheels (1977) and Rock and Roll (1981), and the novel Dazzled (1984). He is an outspoken nationalist on cultural matters.
