James Armstrong Richardson (Jr)

James Armstrong Richardson, Jr, grain merchant, politician (b at Winnipeg 28 Mar 1922), son of James A. RICHARDSON, SR. After studying at Queen's and serving in the RCAF as a Liberator Bomber pilot patrolling the N Atlantic, Richardson joined the family firm of James Richardson and Sons Ltd in 1945 and was chairman and executive officer 1966-68. He was elected Liberal MP for Winnipeg S in June 1968 and appointed minister without portfolio in July. Minister of supply and services 1969-72, he was re-elected in the 1972 general election and was appointed minister of national defence. He resigned from Cabinet in 1976, over the government's language policy, and sat as an Independent 1978-79, when he returned to the family firm and became a director.
