Inco Limited, with executive offices in Toronto, is the world's leading producer of NICKEL, supplying one-third of world demand, and a substantial producer of copper, precious metals and cobalt. In addition, Inco is the world's largest supplier of wrought nickel alloys as well as a leading manufacturer of blades, discs, rings and other forged and precision-machined components made from special alloy materials. The company is a major producer of sulphuric acid and liquid sulphur dioxide, and has other interests in metals, venture capital, mining equipment manufacturing and engineering and technology.

In 1916, the International Nickel Company of Canada, Ltd was established as a Canadian operating subsidiary of the International Nickel Co in New Jersey. In 1928, the Canadian subsidiary became the parent company through an exchange of shares. In 1929, Inco acquired the Mond Nickel Co, Ltd, a British firm incorporated in 1900 to mine in the SUDBURY Basin. Inco's principal mines and processing operations are located in the Sudbury area of Ontario, in the Thompson area of Manitoba and, through a 98%-owned subsidiary (P.T. International Nickel Indonesia), on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The company also has additional metals refineries in Port Colborne, Ont, Clydach, Wales, and Acton, Eng, and has an interest in nickel-refining in Japan through 2 affiliated companies.

The company, through its 2 principal alloy products and forging businesses, Inco Alloys International and Inco Engineered Products Ltd, produces and markets a wide range of alloy products. Inco Alloys International has rolling mill operations in Huntington, West Virginia, in Burnaugh, Kentucky and in Hereford, Eng. Inco Engineered Products Ltd is headquartered in Birmingham, Eng. Another subsidiary, Inmetco, is one of the world's largest recyclers of metallic waste.Inco Ltd suffered losses during the early 1990s primarily due to low nickel prices. In 1993, Inco turned a $28.2 million profit on sales of $3.4 billion (converted from $US), assets of $5.6 billion and 15 709 employees. Inco Ltd's shares were widely held and foreign ownership stood at 50%.
