In 1916, the International Nickel Company of Canada, Ltd was established as a Canadian operating subsidiary of the International Nickel Co in New Jersey. In 1928, the Canadian subsidiary became the parent company through an exchange of shares. In 1929, Inco acquired the Mond Nickel Co, Ltd, a British firm incorporated in 1900 to mine in the SUDBURY Basin. Inco's principal mines and processing operations are located in the Sudbury area of Ontario, in the Thompson area of Manitoba and, through a 98%-owned subsidiary (P.T. International Nickel Indonesia), on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. The company also has additional metals refineries in Port Colborne, Ont, Clydach, Wales, and Acton, Eng, and has an interest in nickel-refining in Japan through 2 affiliated companies.
The company, through its 2 principal alloy products and forging businesses, Inco Alloys International and Inco Engineered Products Ltd, produces and markets a wide range of alloy products. Inco Alloys International has rolling mill operations in Huntington, West Virginia, in Burnaugh, Kentucky and in Hereford, Eng. Inco Engineered Products Ltd is headquartered in Birmingham, Eng. Another subsidiary, Inmetco, is one of the world's largest recyclers of metallic waste.
