TIQ

TIQ (The Indian Question Settled at Last). 'A melodramatic musical satire' in two acts. The libretto by Will F. Sage incorporates poems by Phillips Hawley, and the music was written by Calixa Lavallée. The work probably was written in 1865-6, but there is no proof of its performance. The action takes place among the US-west-coast Sioux and depicts the clashes that occur between Indians and whites, until 'the Indian question is settled at last.' The vocal score, comprising an overture and 26 musical numbers, was published by Russell Brothers, Boston, in 1883. An excerpt - Marche indienne - was arranged for band by J.-J. Gagnier and conducted by him in Montreal in 1933; it has been recorded by the Hannaford Street Silver Band (CBC SMCD-5103) in an arangement by John Beckwith. A shortened version, using the piano-vocal score, was performed on a program in the 'Suite canadienne' series on the French network of CBC radio in 1990. Four numbers from the work are included in CMH, vol 10.
