Lloyd (Ioan) Powell. Pianist, teacher, b Bridgenorth, Shropshire, of Welsh parents, 22 Aug 1888, d Vancouver 25 Mar 1975. At 10 he entered the RCM and later he studied in Berlin and (with Busoni) in Basel. In 1919 he began teaching at the RCM, and later he became an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, travelling in that capacity to Asia, Australia, and South Africa and often performing and lecturing before audiences rarely exposed to classical music. Having adjudicated annually in Canada since the 1930s, Powell moved to Toronto in 1951 and settled in Vancouver in 1954. In Canada he taught privately, broadcast for the CBC, adjudicated, performed, and lectured. At the University of British Columbia he gave recital series which included Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas and the complete piano works of Charles Ives. Powell was the subject of a CBC documentary (23 Feb 1976).
