Fox, George
George (William) Fox. Singer-songwriter, guitarist, b Calgary 23 Mar 1960. A cattle rancher near Cochrane, Alta, Fox began to perfom locally in the early 1980s and issued the self-produced cassette recordings Trail of the Fox and Fresh Tracks in 1985. He emerged as a leading figure in Canadian country music with the release in 1988 of his first album, George Fox (WEA 25-55551), which included the hits 'Angelina,' 'Long Distance,' 'RBJ,' and 'Goldmine,' all his own songs. Fox moved quickly to the concert stage, opening in Canadian cities for Randy Travis, Anne Murray, Willie Nelson, and other major country music stars.

His second album, With All My Might (WEA 25-69271, issued in 1990), included 'Bachelor Girl,' 'Lime Rickey,' and the title song, all popular. A third album, his first recorded in Nashville, Spice of Life (WEA CD-74422), followed in 1991. Fox, who brings in a light tenor and unassuming personality to mainstream country material, starred in his own CBC TV specials in 1990 and 1991. He received seven Big Country Awards 1989-91, including those for top male vocalist each year, as well as both the CCMA award for male vocalist and the Juno Award for country male vocalist in 1990 and 1991. He served as host for the telecast of the the CCMA awards ceremonies in 1991. The guitarist Jerry Martin has been constant to Fox's recordings and live performances.
