Haworth, Frank
Haworth, Frank (Francis). Composer, educator, writer, b Liverpool 13 Jan 1905; LTCL 1927. A self-educated musician, Haworth taught music in Lancashire schools 1925-40 and was appointed by the British Council in 1943 the first music officer to the West Indies. In Bermuda 1946-56 he was a radio programming director, journalist, and music critic. In 1956 he moved to Toronto, where he contributed to the Globe and Mail, Saturday Night and the CBC Times. He composed music for the CBC TV children's series 'Mr. O' (1956) and 'Old Testament Tales' (1957) and contributed scripts and commentary to various CBC music and public affairs programs. For the Ontario Dept of Education he was a travelling organizer and instructor 1963-7, offering music courses, seminars, and workshops. A traditionalist composer who adopts new elements when they seem appropriate, Haworth sums up his music as 'community music,' meant for the amateur rather than the virtuoso. His works have been played in Australia, Czechoslovakia, England, Holland, Italy, Portugal, and the USA. He is an associate of the Canadian Music Centre. In 1985 he moved to Cobourg, Ontario.
