Flora (Henderson) Goulden (b Matheson). Violinist, teacher, b Winnipeg 25 May 1905, d Ottawa 4 Oct 1989; ATCM 1923. At 8 she was a soloist with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. She continued studies in her home city and at 17 left to study with Leon Sametini in Chicago 1922-4, Géza de Kresz in Toronto 1924-7, Rezsö Kemény in Budapest in 1927, Eugène Ysaÿe in Brussels 1927-8, and Marcel Chailley in Paris in 1931. She gave recitals in Canada and Europe and performed as soloist with the Winnipeg SO in 1913, 1927, and 1930, the Vienna Philharmonic (under Weingartner) in 1927, and the Budapest SO in 1927. Returning to Canada she was assistant concertmaster of the pre-war Winnipeg SO and the CBC Winnipeg Orchestra. She moved in 1948 to Ottawa, where she taught privately and served 1955-60 as assistant concertmaster and 1961-3 as concertmaster of the Ottawa Philharmonic Orchestra, 1958-60 as second violin of the Carleton String Quartet, and 1965-9 as concertmaster of the CBC Ottawa Chamber Orchestra. She was president of the ORMTA 1961-2 and of the CFMTA 1967-71. She was named in 1963 to the Board of Studies and Board of Examiners of the RCMT, for which she compiled several books on violin pedagogy (Oakville 1970, 1971), partly in collaboration with John Montague.
