Don Druick. Composer, flutist, b Montreal 23 Jul 1945; B SC mathematics (McGill) 1966. In Montreal he studied flute with Hervé Baillargeon, Jean C. Morin, Harriet Crossland-Edwards, and Gail Grimstead. He later took up baroque flute. He moved to British Columbia where he was resident composer with the Savage God Theatre Co 1969-70, Intermedia in 1972, and Image Flow Productions in 1973 and music director of the Playhouse Theatre Co/Theatre Two in 1971 and Another Smith Productions in 1971. He has composed film scores for Keith Rodan's Cinetude III (1969), David Rimmer's Cellophane Wrapper (1970), Byron Black's Master of Images (1972), and Jack Darcus' feature Wolfpen Principle (1973) and has been commissioned to write for chamber and dance ensembles. His commissioned works include Les Goûts-réunis for shakuhachi and string quartet for the Deep Cove Chamber Music Society, J. Sarabande Bach for bassoonist Christopher Palmer of Halifax, and Hasard/Brouillard for Christ Church Cathedral, Vancouver. Druick's early works use graphic notation or simply an instruction sheet as a guide to an improvised performance. He prepared many such performances for art galleries in Canada, the USA, and Europe. His later works feature melodic writing and use conventional notation. By 1991 he had received eight Canada Council grants in the fields of music, performance art, and video. He has been resident at the Banff CA, Concordia University, and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design; in 1991 he was living in Montreal. He has performed widely across Canada as a soloist and has appeared at many festivals in Canada.
