Létourneau, Claude (violinist)

Claude Létourneau. Violinist, educator, born Quebec City 11 Nov 1924; died there 7 Oct 2012 . He studied violin with Edwin Bélanger and Arthur LeBlanc and then at the CMQ, the CMM, and the TCM (RCMT). Between 1941 and 1947 he took courses in violin, clarinet, and conducting in New York and at the Berkshire Music Center. He was awarded seven bursaries by the Quebec government and obtained the Prix d'Europe in 1945. In 1948 he became a teacher at the CMQ and the Seminaire de Québec where he directed the Société Ste-Cécile 1960-ca 1967. While a member of the Quebec Symphony Orchestra at different periods between 1940 and 1985, he founded the Létourneau String Quartet 1948-58 which gave concerts in schools throughout the Quebec City region. In 1990 he founded the Société musicale Claude Létourneau to promote the pedagogical method which he created and which bears his name. (See Létourneau method )
