Canadian Music Library Association (CMLA)/Association canadienne des bibliothèques musicales (ACBM). Founded in 1956 as a section of the Canadian Library Association, to establish contact between music librarians and carry out projects of interest to them. The membership grew from 37 in the 1950s to about 100 in 1970. Annual meetings coincided with those of the Canadian Library Association. Newsletters appeared in certain years and the CLA issued a number of important bibliographical publications (see list). A brief regarding the role of the National Library of Canada in the area of music was submitted to the national librarian in 1957. CMLA chairmen have been Ogreta McNeill 1956-7, 1964-5, Helmut Kallmann 1957-8, 1967-8, Helen Sinclair 1958-9, Lucien Brochu 1959-60, Melva J. Dwyer 1960-1, Auguste Morisset 1961-2, Laurie Allison 1962-3, Jean Lavender 1963-4, Ronald Napier 1965-6, James Pilton 1966-7, Laura Murray 1968-9, Rhoda Baxter 1969-70, and Lynne Jarman 1970-1. In the absence of a Canadian branch of the International Association of Music Libraries, CMLA kept the international association's Canadian membership records and appointed Helmut Kallmann to serve 1959-71 as its delegate. In 1971 the CMLA was reconstituted as the Canadian Association of Music Libraries.
