Campbell Free Band Concerts/Concerts Campbell gratuits. Annual summer series begun in 1924 in Montreal parks (Lafontaine, Jarry, Jeanne-Mance, etc) and public squares (eg, Dominion) "to encourage bands to play on summer evenings... in public places handy to overcrowded parts of the city". The concerts were established with a bequest of $230,000 by the Kingston-born Montreal corporation lawyer Charles Sandwith Campbell (1858-1923). Numerous Montreal-based bands such as the Canadian Grenadier Guards, the Victoria Rifles, the Fusiliers Mont-Royal, the Salvation Army, the Black Watch Regimental Band, the Metropolitan Concert Band of Montreal, and the Royal Montreal Regiment have appeared in more than 5000 concerts since the inception of the series, which remained active in 1990. As a tribute to the philanthropist, the Montreal composer Maurice Zbriger has written Campbell Memorial March and Campbell 50th Anniversary Overture. In 1970 the program began to include popular, folk, and ethnic repertoire.
