Bickert, Edward Isaac
Edward Isaac Bickert"Ed," jazz guitarist (b at Hochfeld, Man 29 Nov 1932). Canada's best-known jazz guitarist, Bickert began his professional career about 1955 in Toronto, working with Ron COLLIER, Rob MCCONNELL, Don THOMPSON and, for more than 25 years, Moe KOFFMAN. Developing a unique, understated style of considerable harmonic sophistication, he achieved international prominence through his work in 1974-76 with US saxophonist Paul Desmond. His emergence was supported by his own early recordings (1975-78) and by those with McConnell's Boss Brass. He recorded a dozen LPs and CDs as a leader or coleader to 1997, including several (eg, I Wished upon the Moon, Third Floor Richard) for the noted California label Concord Jazz. The LP Ed Bickert/Don Thompson received a Juno award in 1979. Bickert was made a member of the Order of Canada in 1997.
