His totals of 310 goals, 742 assists and 1052 points established new NHL records for defencemen, eclipsing the marks set by Bobby Orr. He also had 56 goals, 108 assists and 164 points in 185 play-off games, again the highest totals for a defenceman in history. Potvin was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1991. Following retirement he served as a colour commentator for the Florida Panthers, a position he held from 1993 to 2009.
