Cambridge, Ont, incorporated as a city in 1973, population 126 748 (2011c), 120 371 (2006c). The City of Cambridge, located along the GRAND RIVER, 55 km northwest of Hamilton near KITCHENER-WATERLOO, was created on 1 January 1973 when the communities of GALT, Preston and HESPELER were amalgamated as well as parts of North Dumfries and Waterloo townships. Prior to 1834 Preston was known as Cambridge Mills, after Cambridge, Eng. and Cambridge was narrowly chosen as the name for the new city.

The economy of the city is based on diversified manufacturing including automotive, textiles, plastics, food processing and technology sectors. A campus of Conestoga College is in Cambridge. The annual Can-Amera, held alternately in Cambridge and Saginaw, Mich, attracts amateur athletes.
