Basil H. Johnston, author (b at Cape Crocker Ojibway Reservation, Ont 13 Jul 1929). One of the foremost native authors, Johnston, an ethnologist at the Royal Ontario Museum, has written widely about his people's traditions and modern life. Ojibway Heritage and Ojibway Ceremonies were written to resensitize his people to traditions many had abandoned or never learned about. How the Birds Got Their Colors (1978), Tales the Elders Told: Ojibway Legends (1981) and By Canoe & Moccasin: Some Native Names of the Great Lakes are myths and legends adapted for children. Moose Meat and Wild Rice is a collection of humorous short stories about contemporary reservation life. Indian School Days traces the author's childhood years at St Peter Claver's School in northern Ontario.
