Jean-Jacques Bertrand, premier of Quebec (born on June 20, 1916, at Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Que.; died on Feb 22, 1973, at Montreal). Bertrand was premier of Quebec from 1968 to 1970. He was first elected to Quebec's Parliament in 1948 as a member of the Union Nationale Party. He was a leading member of the Cabinet during the 1950s, and ran for the party leadership in 1961, losing to Daniel Johnson. In 1966 the Union Nationale returned to power. Bertrand became minister of education. Two years later, when Johnson died, he became premier. Bertrand was a strong defender of Quebec rights within Canada, but his party was not popular with voters and it lost the election of 1970. He was leader of the opposition until 1971.
