The Bloc populaire canadien began in September 1942, as an alliance of Quebec nationalist politicians who opposed conscription (mandatory military service). At the federal level in Ottawa several members of Parliament supported the Bloc, but it was most successful in Quebec where members formed a third party. Led by journalist André Laurendeau, the party elected several members to the legislature. It ceased to exist in 1949.
